Copper Theft Sparks Explosive Blast at Atlanta's Northside Plaza
National Desk
April 29, 2026
The explosion rocked Northside Plaza Apartments on Markham Street in downtown Atlanta just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, destroying much of Building C across from Mercedes-Benz Stadium.[1][3] Integral Property Management, which owns the complex, stated that an intruder broke into a vacant unit to steal copper, damaging a gas line and causing a leak.[2][4][6] When the thief used an open flame inside, it ignited the accumulated gas, sending debris flying across the courtyard.[3][4]
Emergency calls flooded in hours before the blast: one around noon and another at 1:45 p.m. from nearby businesses reporting a potent gas smell.[3][4] Atlanta Fire Rescue, police and other agencies sifted through rubble overnight, confirming the theft as the trigger.[1][2][3] A badly burned man, believed to be the person of interest, was hospitalized but has stabilized; his identity remains undisclosed.[1][3]
The incident highlights persistent crime at the aging complex in Castleberry Hill. Residents report frequent trespassers in vacant units and ongoing copper thefts, with Castleberry Hill Neighborhood Association President Steve Yazell noting chronic break-ins.[1] Forty residents, initially reported as 19 families, were displaced.[1][2][4] The investigation continues, with no charges announced yet.[1][3]
