Atlanta Public Schools' Teacher Shortage Eases to Just 3 Vacancies
National Desk
April 27, 2026
Atlanta Public Schools entered the 2025 academic year with just three teacher vacancies, a dramatic improvement from the triple-digit shortages that gripped metro Atlanta districts as recently as 2024.[1] The district's lean figure mirrors a broader regional trend: Gwinnett County, Georgia's largest system, reported 14 openings; Cobb County had five; and Cherokee County matched Atlanta's three.[1] Fulton County Schools, however, faced 66 unfilled positions—about 1% of its 6,200 teaching roles—while DeKalb celebrated progress with only two vacancies after surpassing 100 the previous year and 300 before that.[1]
The teacher shortage, intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, has forced districts into emergency measures like provisional certifications and aggressive recruitment.[1] In April 2024, an Atlanta News First investigation revealed metro systems struggling with hundreds of openings, led by Clayton County's 178 and DeKalb's 120, with experts citing insufficient pay incentives amid rising living costs.[2][3][5] Atlanta Public Schools responded by setting an ambitious target: average teacher salaries of $100,000 by 2030.[1]
Regional initiatives are gaining traction to combat attrition, particularly in majority Black and low-income districts hit hardest by turnover.[1][4] Cobb County's participation in Georgia's BEST program and Georgia State University's Pathways to Teacher Credentialing Project provide advancement opportunities and credentials for aspiring educators.[1] Statewide advocates urge lawmakers to prioritize salary boosts, better benefits and hiring support to stabilize Georgia's teaching workforce.[4]
