4 Reasons to Ditch the Scale (From a Dietitian)
Palm Beach Gardens residents looking to re-evaluate their health journey might consider putting away the bathroom scale, according to local dietitian Sarah Jenkins, who practices at Gardens Nutrition on PGA Boulevard. Jenkins suggests that focusing solely on weight can be counterproductive and offers four key reasons to ditch the scale.
First, Jenkins emphasizes that weight fluctuations are normal and can be influenced by many factors unrelated to body fat, such as hydration, muscle mass, and hormonal changes—especially in Florida's humid climate. She notes that these daily or weekly shifts can be discouraging and lead to unnecessary stress.
Secondly, the dietitian points out that the scale doesn't differentiate between fat and muscle. "You could be gaining muscle and losing fat, which is a positive change for your health, but the number on the scale might not reflect that progress," Jenkins explained during a recent community wellness talk at the Palm Beach Gardens Community Center.
Her third reason involves mental well-being. For many, the scale can become an obsession, leading to negative self-talk and an unhealthy relationship with food and exercise. Jenkins advocates for a more holistic approach to health that prioritizes how one feels, their energy levels, and overall vitality.
Finally, Jenkins encourages residents to focus on sustainable healthy habits rather than a number. She suggests tracking improvements in fitness, sleep quality, and dietary choices as more meaningful indicators of progress, such as those enjoyed during walks in Gardens Park. "True health is about consistent, positive lifestyle changes, not just a fleeting number," she concluded.
