Pensacola Airport Gets $9M Federal Grant for Security Expansion
Pensacola International Airport will use a $9 million federal grant to expand its TSA security checkpoint, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced this week.
The grant, awarded through the FAA's Airport Terminal Program under the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, will fund an 8,400-square-foot expansion that increases screening capacity to six lanes. The project includes new passenger queuing areas, restrooms, and baggage handling systems.
Matt Coughlin, executive director of Pensacola International Airport, said the funding will support the airport's larger Terminal Expansion and Modernization Program. "This funding allows us to accelerate critical infrastructure improvements that will enhance the passenger experience and improve operational efficiency," he said.
Mayor D.C. Reeves noted the grant reduces financial pressure on passengers and bonds. "Receiving these grant dollars helps keep costs low, which keeps Pensacola competitive," he said.
U.S. Rep. Jimmy Patronis, who serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, called the investment essential for the region's economy. "When we invest in transportation infrastructure, we support jobs and strengthen our economy," he said.
Construction on the checkpoint expansion will begin at the end of 2026. More information is available at FlyPensacola.com or TransformPNS.com.
