Pensacola Airport Gets $9M Federal Grant for Security Expansion
Pensacola International Airport will expand its security checkpoint with a $9 million federal grant announced this week. The Federal Aviation Administration awarded the money through its Airport Terminal Program, funded by the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
The 8,400-square-foot expansion will add six security screening lanes, passenger queuing space, restrooms, and modernized baggage handling systems. Construction begins at the end of 2026.
Matt Coughlin, executive director of Pensacola International Airport, said the funding accelerates infrastructure improvements needed to handle regional growth. "This allows us to enhance the passenger experience and position PNS for the next generation of growth," Coughlin said.
Mayor D.C. Reeves called the grant preferable to raising airport fees or issuing bonds. "Receiving these grant dollars helps keep costs low and keeps Pensacola competitive," Reeves said.
The checkpoint project is part of a larger terminal modernization program that will increase passenger capacity, upgrade accessibility features, and create space for future gates to support additional airline service.
U.S. Rep. Jimmy Patronis, who serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said the grant supports regional economic growth. "When we invest in transportation infrastructure, we support jobs and strengthen our economy," Patronis said.
The FAA announced this award in the fifth and final round of the Airport Terminal Program, which funds terminal modernization across the nation. More information is available at TransformPNS.com and FlyPensacola.com.
