Storm Surge Watch Issued for Eastern Orleans: Life-Threatening Flooding Possible
A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for Eastern Orleans, including Lake Catherine, by NWS New Orleans, warning of potential life-threatening flooding and advising immediate preparations and evacuation readiness.
Eastern Orleans residents, particularly those in the Lake Catherine area, are advised to immediately prepare for life-threatening storm surge flooding, as a Storm Surge Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service New Orleans. The watch was issued today, October 7, at 3:54 PM CDT, and is in effect until tomorrow, October 8, at 12:00 AM CDT.
Forecasters anticipate potential storm surge inundation of 3-5 feet above ground in surge-prone areas. This significant threat could lead to areas of inundation with damaging waves, making sections of near-shore escape routes and secondary roads impassable, especially around Venetian Isles and Lake Catherine. Property owners should secure belongings and be ready to evacuate if orders are given. Failure to heed evacuation orders may result in loss of life.
In addition to surge, peak winds of 20-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected, with a potential for winds reaching 39 to 57 mph. Residents should complete preparations to protect property before hazardous winds arrive, as limited damage to structures like porches, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Scattered power and communication outages are also a concern.
Little to no impacts are expected from flooding rain or tornadoes at this time. Stay informed by monitoring local news and official alerts. For more information, visit gohsep.la.gov/emergency.
