Hurricane Warning Issued for Southern Jackson; Tropical Storm Isaias Intensifies
A Hurricane Warning has been issued for Southern Jackson Parish, with Tropical Storm Isaias intensifying and expected to become a hurricane by Thursday morning, bringing significant wind and storm surge threats to the region from Friday afternoon into Saturday.
Residents in Southern Jackson Parish are now under a Hurricane Warning, while Southern Harrison, Eastern Orleans, Lower Plaquemines, Lower St. Bernard, Southeast St. Tammany, and Southern Hancock are under a Storm Surge Warning and Tropical Storm Warning. Northern Hancock and Northern Harrison have also been issued a Tropical Storm Warning.
The National Weather Service in New Orleans reports Tropical Storm Isaias, currently 500 miles south-southwest of New Orleans, is expected to become a hurricane by Thursday morning. It is moving east-northeast at 9 mph with 70 mph winds.
Impacts are expected from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. Coastal areas east of Ocean Springs, MS, could experience hurricane-force winds and storm surges of 5 to 7 feet. Areas west of Ocean Springs to the mouth of the Mississippi River face tropical storm-force winds and 3 to 5 feet of storm surge.
Protect against dangerous wind and life-threatening storm surge. Follow local officials' advice, complete all preparations, and ensure you are in a safe location before winds or flooding begin.
