Isaias Intensifies: Hurricane Expected, Storm Surge and Wind Warnings Issued
Tropical Storm Isaias is rapidly intensifying and is expected to become a hurricane by Thursday morning, threatening Southeast Louisiana and South Mississippi with significant storm surge, wind, and rainfall.
Residents in Southeast Louisiana and South Mississippi should finalize hurricane preparations immediately as Tropical Storm Isaias is rapidly intensifying and is forecast to become a hurricane by Thursday morning. The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement, effective October 7 at 4:02 PM CDT, highlighting significant wind, storm surge, and rainfall threats.
A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Northern Harrison and Northern Jackson, with a Storm Surge Watch and Hurricane Watch for Southern Harrison and Southern Jackson. A Storm Surge Watch and Tropical Storm Watch cover Eastern Orleans, Lower Plaquemines, Lower St. Bernard, Southeast St. Tammany, and Southern Hancock. The Storm Surge Watch for Upper St. Bernard has been cancelled.
Isaias is currently located about 530 miles south-southwest of New Orleans, moving east-northeast at 8 mph with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph. Impacts are most likely Friday into Saturday. Coastal areas east of Ocean Springs in coastal Mississippi could experience life-threatening wind and storm surge, with potential for extensive damage and prolonged power outages. West of Ocean Springs and in extreme coastal southeast Louisiana, dangerous wind and locally hazardous surge are expected.
Prepare for extensive power and communications outages, impassable roads, and significant property damage in the most affected areas. Heavy rainfall may lead to dangerous flooding, particularly east of Ocean Springs. Follow all advice from local officials regarding potential evacuations. Ensure your emergency plan and supplies kit are ready. Stay informed by monitoring weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news. The next update is expected around 11 PM CDT.
