Orlando, FL – Valencia College continues to combat student food insecurity through its VCentials program, providing free access to essential food items across all seven main campus locations. This initiative helps students focus on their studies without the added burden of hunger.
The VCentials markets are open daily to all Valencia students, allowing them to select up to five free items. Shelves and coolers are stocked with a variety of foods, including fresh produce, protein, dairy, ready-to-eat meals, and shelf-stable options. This direct access to nutritious food helps students manage their daily needs.
Dee, the VCentials Operations Manager at the Osceola campus, highlights the direct connection between nutrition and academic performance. "If you're taking a test you prepared for it but you're hungry, guess what you're going to hear louder? It isn't your brain; it's your stomach," Dee stated. "Why not get a snack, eat it before you take your test? This way, you can achieve much higher scholastic scores."
School officials noted a recent audit of the VCentials registration software. This audit indicated that 85% of students who utilized the food program reported incomes at or below the federal poverty level. This statistic underscores the critical need for such support services within the student population.
Carol Traynor, Valencia’s Senior Director of Public Relations, confirmed the program's positive impact. "Overall, the feedback suggests that it keeps them in college and helps them use their available funds for other needs," Traynor said, referencing feedback collected through the school’s student development office.
During the 2025-26 academic year, 53,000 students visited a VCentials market across all Valencia campuses. The program distributed enough food for approximately 127,583 meals. Traynor also reported that this resource saved students about $250,000 in "real-world retail costs." The first VCentials market opened on the flagship West Campus in August 2023.
Valencia College continues to prioritize student well-being, recognizing that basic needs must be met for academic success. The VCentials program remains a vital resource for students facing financial challenges, ensuring they have access to the food they need to thrive.
