Orange County Public Schools Mental Health Counselors Saved from Layoffs Amid Budget Cuts

Four licensed mental health counselors with Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) faced an "emotional rollercoaster" this week after initially being told their positions were in jeopardy due to budget cuts, only to be informed their jobs were secure within 24 hours.

This uncertainty comes as OCPS recently announced an additional $8.5 million in budget cuts, creating anxiety among employees providing vital services to students. The district's financial challenges have led to a confusing situation for staff.

One anonymous mental health counselor described receiving a Teams notification on Wednesday night, September 18, for a meeting with her director. She stated that during a meeting on Thursday afternoon, September 19, she was informed her position was being eliminated. The Director over the Licensed Mental Health Counselors was reportedly very emotional during this conversation, with several people on the call in tears.

The counselor was told to expect a termination letter on Friday, September 20, which she believed would give her two weeks' notice, with an expected last day of October 2. However, later that same Friday, she received a call from the director stating that money had been "found" and her position was safe until the end of the year. The Orange County Public Schools spokesperson stated that individuals were notified their position was "under review" as part of a recalculation process, not terminated.
