Sierra Nevada Cheeses Recalled Due to E. coli Outbreak

Four varieties of Sierra Nevada Graziers grass-fed raw milk cheeses are under recall because of a link to a multi-state E. coli outbreak. The recall impacts consumers nationwide who may have purchased these products, which include medium cheddar, sharp cheddar, jalapeño jack, and Monterey jack.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported the outbreak has hospitalized at least eight people across the country. Consumers who purchased these cheeses should check their refrigerators and freezers and avoid eating, serving or selling them. They can return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Sierra Nevada Cheese Company issued the recall for its Graziers grass-fed raw milk cheeses. The affected items were sold in 8-ounce and 16-ounce packages for consumers, and in 5-pound loaves for food service customers and wholesalers. These products were available for purchase online and in stores nationwide.

Federal health officials continue to investigate the outbreak, identifying 13 cases nationwide as of last Friday. State and local health officials are conducting interviews to determine what affected individuals consumed. The FDA also advises cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the recalled cheese to prevent cross-contamination.

Symptoms of E. coli infection can appear a few days after consuming contaminated food and include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea or vomiting. Some strains can cause serious conditions, including bloody diarrhea, kidney failure, high blood pressure and neurological problems. FDA investigators are working to confirm the source of the outbreak and determine if other products are affected.
