Windermere police are searching for a woman who posed as an FBI courier and stole $18,400 from an 82-year-old resident.

Scammers impersonating FBI agents called the victim and claimed to be investigating fraud. They instructed the victim to withdraw cash and place it in a shoebox. A woman then arrived at the victim's home to collect the money and left in a silver Toyota.

"These criminals use fear and the appearance of authority to take advantage of people," Windermere Police Chief David Ogden said. "If someone claiming to represent law enforcement asks you to withdraw money and hand it over to a courier, contact your local police department or call 911 to verify. The Orlando Police Department and other local agencies would never operate this way."

Police ask anyone with information about the suspect or vehicle to contact Sergeant John Allen at 407-909-5306 or jallen@windermere.gov.
