Blowing Dust Advisory Issued for Upper Columbia Basin Until 5 PM PDT

A Blowing Dust Advisory is in effect for the Upper Columbia Basin until 5 PM PDT today, warning of reduced visibility and hazardous driving conditions due to strong winds.

A Blowing Dust Advisory has been issued for the Upper Columbia Basin, effective immediately until 5:00 PM PDT this afternoon, October 11. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Spokane, WA, warns of patchy to localized areas of blowing dust, which could reduce visibility to between one-quarter and one mile at times.

Northeast winds are expected to be between 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph. The advisory impacts the communities of Wilbur, Ritzville, Harrington, Creston, Grand Coulee, Odessa, and Coulee City.

Hazardous driving conditions are expected due to significantly reduced visibility. The NWS advises drivers to be prepared for a sudden drop in visibility to one mile or less. If you encounter blowing dust or blowing sand on the roadway or observe it approaching, pull off the road as far as safely possible and put your vehicle in park. Turn your vehicle's lights completely off and keep your foot off the brake pedal. Remember the critical safety message: 'Pull Aside, Stay Alive'.
