Beach Hazards Statement Issued for Accomack and Northampton Counties

A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Accomack and Northampton Counties until 8:00 PM EDT today, October 11, due to a high risk of rip currents, high surf, and potential coastal flooding.

Residents and visitors in Accomack and Northampton Counties are advised to stay out of the water due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield VA. The alert is in effect until 8:00 PM EDT today, October 11.

A high risk for rip currents is expected. Additionally, a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 6:00 PM EDT this evening, with large breaking waves of 7 to 8 feet anticipated in the surf zone. A Coastal Flood Statement is also in effect until 3:00 PM EDT this afternoon, with up to one half foot of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions are expected, along with localized beach erosion. Shallow flooding is possible in vulnerable waterfront and shoreline locations.

The NWS advises against driving through flooded roadways. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions.
