A Beach Hazards Statement, High Surf Advisory, and Coastal Flood Statement are in effect for Accomack and Northampton Counties through Sunday evening, October 11, with warnings of dangerous rip currents, large waves, and potential shallow flooding.
Residents and visitors in Accomack and Northampton Counties are advised of a Beach Hazards Statement, High Surf Advisory, and Coastal Flood Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield, VA, effective immediately. These alerts remain in effect through Sunday evening, October 11.
A high risk for dangerous rip currents is expected from Sunday morning through Sunday evening. Large breaking waves of 7 to 8 feet are anticipated in the surf zone from 6 AM to 6 PM EDT on Sunday. Additionally, a Coastal Flood Statement warns of up to one-half foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways from Sunday morning through Sunday afternoon.
These conditions may lead to shallow flooding in the most vulnerable waterfront and shoreline locations, dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, and localized beach erosion. The NWS advises the public to remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions. Do not drive through flooded roadways.
