Beach Hazards Alert for Accomack and Northampton Counties: Dangerous Conditions Expected
A Beach Hazards Statement, High Surf Advisory, and Coastal Flood Statement are in effect for Accomack and Northampton Counties from Sunday morning, October 11, with dangerous rip currents, large waves, and potential shallow flooding expected. Avoid swimming and driving through flooded areas.
Residents and visitors in Accomack and Northampton Counties are advised of multiple coastal hazards expected to begin Sunday morning, October 11. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield, VA, has issued a Beach Hazards Statement, a High Surf Advisory, and a Coastal Flood Statement, effective until Sunday evening.
A high risk for dangerous rip currents is expected from 8 AM EDT Sunday through Sunday evening. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming and surfing conditions.
A High Surf Advisory is in effect from 6 AM to 6 PM EDT Sunday, with large breaking waves of 7 to 8 feet expected in the surf zone. Localized beach erosion is also possible.
Additionally, a Coastal Flood Statement has been issued from 7 AM EDT Sunday through Sunday afternoon. Up to one half foot of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Shallow flooding is possible in the most vulnerable locations. Do not drive through flooded roadways.
