North Miami Nuisance Board Critically Understaffed

The North Miami Nuisance Abatement Board, responsible for resolving public nuisance disputes, currently has four of its five member positions vacant. The board ensures due process while addressing community concerns throughout the city.

Aldo Flores, appointed by Councilwoman Estimé-Irvin on Feb. 9, 2021, is the sole member. His term concludes Nov. 3, 2026. The four remaining positions, nominated by Mayor Desulme, Vice Mayor Timothe, Councilman Burns and Councilman Charles, are empty.

The board requires five members who reside or own businesses in North Miami. City Council members appoint these individuals to two-year terms, renewable for up to four consecutive terms. Vacancy appointments serve the remainder of the unexpired term.

The Nuisance Abatement Board updated its regulations on May 25, 2010, via Ordinance 1295. The City Council may remove a member with three affirmative votes without cause. Two consecutive unexcused absences automatically forfeit a member's position.

The board meets as needed in the Council Chamber, 776 NE 125 Street, 2nd Floor, North Miami. With Flores's term ending in just over a month, the City Council must fill the vacancies to ensure the board can effectively carry out its duties.
