Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin announced Monday that the current NHL season will be his last. The 41-year-old forward, who has played his entire 22-season career with the Capitals, shared the news with his teammates, emphasizing his family's wish for them to be informed first.

Ovechkin's retirement marks the end of an era for one of hockey's most prolific scorers. He broke Wayne Gretzky's career goal-scoring record in April 2025 and currently holds 929 goals, 1,688 points, and 857 penalty minutes in the NHL. His decision comes after signing a one-year contract for $4.25 million, according to the team.

Reflecting on his impending retirement, Ovechkin stated, "It's sad, but it is what it is. It's hard, but let's enjoy it and let's do some special things this year." He added, "We have an unbelievable team this year. Let's make the playoffs, let's have fun and enjoy the moment because times fly."

Ovechkin's career began when the Capitals drafted him as the No. 1 pick in 2004. His NHL debut was Oct. 5, 2005, against the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he scored two goals. He earned the Calder Trophy as the top rookie at the end of his first season, finishing with 106 points from 52 goals and 54 assists. His accolades include the Richard and Hart trophies, the Pearson Award, eight selections as a First-Team NHL All-Star, and a place on the list of the 100 Greatest NHL Players. He led the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup victory in 2018, where he also received the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP with 15 postseason goals.

The Capitals' first home game this season is Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Their last regular-season home game is scheduled for April 4 against the Penguins, with their final regular-season game on April 10 against the Philadelphia Flyers.
