Storm Surge Warning for Southern Jackson: Life-Threatening Flooding Possible
A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Southern Jackson, including Pascagoula and Ocean Springs, with life-threatening storm surge of 3-5 feet above ground possible; residents should shelter immediately.
A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Southern Jackson, including Pascagoula, Ocean Springs, St. Martin, Gautier, and Moss Point, by the National Weather Service (NWS) New Orleans, LA. This warning is in effect from October 9 at 4:12 AM CDT until 12:15 PM UTC today, with life-threatening storm surge possible through Saturday morning.
Residents in these areas should shelter against a life-threatening storm surge of greater than 3 feet above ground. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete, and evacuees should be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. Remain sheltered in a safe location and do not venture outside. The NWS forecasts peak storm surge inundation of 3-5 feet above ground in surge-prone areas.
Wind speeds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are expected, posing a limited threat for damage to porches, awnings, carports, and sheds. Many large tree limbs may break, and some power and communications outages are possible. Move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin.
Additional rainfall of approximately 1 inch is also anticipated, with potential for moderate flooding. This could lead to several evacuations and rescues, and rivers may quickly swell. Heed any flood watches and warnings. Tornadoes are not expected at this time. For more information, visit msema.org.
