URGENT: Life-Threatening Storm Surge Warning for Southern Jackson

A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Southern Jackson, with a potential for life-threatening storm surge of 4-6 feet above ground through Saturday morning; evacuate immediately if ordered.

A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Southern Jackson, including Pascagoula, Ocean Springs, St. Martin, Gautier, and Moss Point, effective immediately until 6:15 AM CDT on October 9. The National Weather Service in New Orleans reports a potential for life-threatening storm surge of 4-6 feet above ground in surge-prone areas through Saturday morning.

Residents in affected areas should complete evacuation efforts and flood preparations immediately. If evacuation orders are given for your area, leave to avoid being cut off from emergency services. Significant impacts are expected, including inundation with storm surge flooding, damage to buildings near the coast, and potential washing out of near-shore escape routes. Moderate damage to marinas and piers is also anticipated.

Peak winds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected. Prepare for limited wind damage, including to porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes. Some large tree limbs may break, and scattered power outages are possible. Move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous. Approximately 1 inch of rainfall is forecast, which may lead to moderate flooding, particularly in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Heed any flood watches and warnings.
