Tropical Storm Warning for Coastal Jefferson: Prepare for Severe Conditions

Coastal Jefferson County is under a Tropical Storm Warning with immediate severe threats including life-threatening storm surge, major flooding rain, and potential tornadoes; residents should remain sheltered and heed all warnings.

Staff Writer
10/09/2026 · Jefferson County edition

Coastal Jefferson County residents are under a Tropical Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL, effective immediately as of October 9 at 8:28 AM EDT. This warning indicates severe conditions are expected through Saturday morning.

Life-threatening storm surge of 4-6 feet above ground is possible. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete, and evacuees should be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. Remain sheltered in a safe location and do not venture outside. Major flooding from an additional 4-8 inches of rain is anticipated, prompting potential evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to act will likely result in serious injury or loss of life.

While sustained winds are expected to remain below tropical storm force, with peaks of 10-20 mph and gusts to 35 mph, the potential for several tornadoes exists. Keep informed of additional weather alerts and be ready to shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued.
