MONROE COUNTY — A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Monroe County, including Homewood and Monroeville, effective immediately. The National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL issued the warning today, October 9, at 6:53 AM CDT. This warning indicates severe conditions are expected, with potential for significant wind damage and extensive flooding.
Residents should prepare for dangerous winds of strong tropical storm force, with peak forecasts of 25-35 mph and gusts up to 55 mph. There is potential for winds up to 58-73 mph. Move to safe shelter now before winds become hazardous. Expect damage to roofing, siding, and outbuildings. Unsecured objects will become dangerous projectiles. Several large trees may snap or uproot, and roads could become impassable due to debris. Scattered power and communication outages are likely.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Major flooding is expected from 3-6 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts. Evacuations and rescues are likely, and flood waters may enter many structures. Rivers and streams could overflow their banks rapidly. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life.
Tornadoes are not expected, but gusty winds and thunderstorms may still occur. This warning is effective until 3:00 PM UTC today.
