Miami Halts City Hall Repurposing in Coconut Grove Amidst Museum and Pan Am Proposals

Miami city officials are not currently considering a change of use for the historic City Hall building in Coconut Grove, despite formal proposals from the Museum of Miami and Pan American World Airways, LLC. A municipal spokesperson stated on Thursday that officials are "not considering a change of use for the Dinner Key facilities at this moment."

This decision follows a 4-1 vote by Miami commissioners last week to continue using the waterfront building for City Commission meetings. The vote came as much of the municipal government prepares to relocate to a new administrative complex near Miami Freedom Park.

The Museum of Miami proposed preserving the historic terminal and constructing a dedicated museum nearby, envisioning a civic campus that would integrate Miami's history, community programs, and ongoing governmental functions. Pan American World Airways, LLC, in its proposal, suggested utilizing some offices within the building for its sales, marketing, and corporate communications teams, while allowing commissioners to continue meeting on the ground floor. Pan Am also proposed incorporating historical artifacts into the building and eventually operating fully electric, 12-person capacity seaplanes from the waterfront.

Both organizations formally submitted their proposals and graphic representations to the city. However, for now, the city maintains its stance against repurposing the Dinner Key facilities.

The building, located at 3500 Pan American Drive, holds significant historical value for Miami. Constructed in 1933, it originally served as a seaplane terminal for Pan American World Airways. Since 1954, it has functioned as Miami's City Hall, making it a long-standing landmark in the community.

Residents can expect City Commission meetings to continue at the historic 3500 Pan American Drive location for the foreseeable future.
