Federal Report Details Severe Overcrowding, Safety Issues at Krome Detention Center

A federal watchdog report recently confirmed significant overcrowding, food safety violations, and medical staffing shortages at the Krome North Service Processing Center in southwest Miami-Dade. The findings align with concerns local residents and advocates have raised for months regarding conditions at the immigration detention facility.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General conducted an unannounced inspection in May 2025. Inspectors identified nine areas requiring corrective action, concluding that overcrowding contributed to multiple operational and safety concerns throughout the facility.

On the first day of the inspection, Krome held 1,102 detainees, operating approximately 25% above its maximum capacity of 882. Inspectors documented six intake holding rooms exceeding their posted capacity, with detainees standing or lying on floors due to lack of space. Some detainees remained in intake processing areas for more than 12 hours, exceeding permitted detention standards. The report also noted housing units exceeding capacity and detainees sleeping on temporary cots because permanent beds were unavailable.

Beyond overcrowding, the federal report highlighted food safety violations and medical staffing shortages. These issues echo complaints that emerged around June 2025, when protesters gathered outside the detention center and emergency 911 calls from the facility detailed medical and mental health crises among detainees.

The Inspector General’s report underscores the need for immediate corrective action at Krome. Residents can expect further updates as federal and local authorities address the deficiencies outlined in the report.
