Fort Lauderdale police arrested a U.S. Postal Service driver Tuesday evening on suspicion of driving under the influence while on duty. Officers responded to a traffic complaint around 8 p.m. in the 700 block of Northeast 17th Court regarding a marked USPS vehicle. Callers reported the driver was screaming while operating the truck.
Officers located the vehicle, which reportedly nearly struck an officer before initiating a traffic stop. A DUI officer responded to the scene after initial officers observed signs of impairment. The driver, identified as 32-year-old Eliezer Valcourt, appeared unsteady with glassy eyes and droopy eyelids. Officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and noted his speech was slurred.
Valcourt told police he had been working since 9 a.m. and was nearing the end of his route. He denied drinking alcohol that day. During field sobriety exercises, Valcourt removed a toothbrush from his pocket and brushed his teeth on the roadway before beginning the walk-and-turn test. The officer observed eight possible clues and noted Valcourt nearly fell at the end. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Broward County Main Jail, facing two DUI-related charges.
