LAUDERDALE – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Lauderdale County, effective immediately as of October 8 at 10:16 PM CDT. Residents should act now to complete preparations before hazardous winds and significant flooding begin.
A Tropical Storm Watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 48 hours. Peak wind forecasts are 10-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, but there is a potential for winds between 39 to 57 mph. Prepare for limited wind damage, including to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect broken tree limbs and potential power outages.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts. This presents a potential for moderate flooding. Emergency plans should include the possibility of evacuations and rescues. Rivers and small streams may overflow, leading to hazardous driving conditions and road closures. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life.
Tornadoes are not expected at this time, though showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. This Tropical Storm Watch expires October 9, 2026, at 6:15 AM UTC.
