LAUDERDALE – Residents in Lauderdale County must act immediately to complete preparations as a Tropical Storm Warning has been issued. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, issued the warning today, October 9, at 1:00 PM CDT, effective until 9:00 PM UTC tonight.

Tropical storm-force winds are expected within the next 36 hours. Peak winds are forecast at 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with the potential for winds between 39-57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible, along with downed tree limbs and potential power outages. Drivers should expect hazardous conditions, especially on bridges.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are expected, with locally higher totals, posing a significant risk of moderate flooding. Residents in flood-prone areas should consider protective actions. Rivers and small streams may overflow, leading to road closures and inundation in low-lying areas. Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings.

Tornadoes are not expected, according to the NWS. Stay informed of the latest forecast changes.
