LAUDERDALE – Residents in Lauderdale County must act immediately to complete preparations as a Tropical Storm Warning has been issued. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, issued the warning today, October 9, at 1:00 PM CDT, effective until 9:00 PM UTC tonight.
Tropical storm-force winds are expected within the next 36 hours. Peak winds are forecast at 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with the potential for winds between 39-57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible, along with downed tree limbs and potential power outages. Drivers should expect hazardous conditions, especially on bridges.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are expected, with locally higher totals, posing a significant risk of moderate flooding. Residents in flood-prone areas should consider protective actions. Rivers and small streams may overflow, leading to road closures and inundation in low-lying areas. Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings.
