Wolfforth Fire Department Adopts 48/96 Work Schedule

Staff Writer
June 11, 2026

The Wolfforth Fire & EMS Department adopted a 48/96 work schedule this month, requiring firefighters to work 48 consecutive hours on duty followed by 96 hours off.

Fire Chief Lance Barrett said the schedule improves both emergency response and staff welfare. "The 48/96 schedule gives our crews the time they need to train, recover, and perform at their best," Barrett said.

The longer shifts allow crews to complete inspections, public outreach, and training without interruption from shift changes. Firefighters gain four consecutive days off between shifts, reducing burnout and improving readiness. Fewer shift handoffs reduce coordination gaps and allow for deeper training sessions.

The city implemented the schedule without hiring additional staff or increasing costs. Wolfforth joins fire departments across the country that have adopted the 48/96 model in recent years.

City officials said the arrangement helps recruit and retain firefighters by offering a competitive work schedule. The extended breaks give personnel time for rest and family commitments between demanding shifts.
