Wolfforth Fire Department Implements 48/96 Work Schedule
The Wolfforth Fire & EMS Department adopted a 48/96 work schedule this month, requiring firefighters to work 48 consecutive hours followed by 96 hours off.
Fire Chief Lance Barrett said the schedule improves both service delivery and firefighter wellness. The longer shifts allow crews to complete inspections, training, and public outreach without interruption from shift changes. Firefighters gain four consecutive days off to rest and spend time with family.
Departments using the 48/96 model report improved sleep quality and lower absenteeism. The schedule requires no additional staffing or budget increases, city officials said.
Barrett said the change positions the department to meet growing service demands as Wolfforth expands. The competitive schedule also helps attract and retain firefighters.
