Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Lowndes County: Prepare for Severe Weather
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Lowndes County, including Fort Deposit and Hayneville, by the NWS, warning of potential tropical storm-force winds, moderate flooding, and possible tornadoes from Friday evening through Saturday morning.
LOWNDES COUNTY, AL – October 8, 2026 – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Lowndes County, effective immediately. This watch indicates that tropical storm-force winds are possible within the area within the next 48 hours, specifically impacting Fort Deposit and Hayneville.
Residents should complete all preparations to protect property as soon as possible. Hazardous wind of equivalent tropical storm force, with peak gusts up to 75 mph, is expected from Friday evening until Saturday morning. Limited damage to structures like porches, awnings, and mobile homes is possible, along with downed tree limbs and scattered power outages. Move to safe shelter before hazardous winds arrive.
Moderate flooding rain is also anticipated, with 2-4 inches possible and locally higher amounts. Emergency plans should include potential evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings, as failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and underpasses and low-lying areas could experience rapid inundation.
The NWS also indicates that the situation is somewhat favorable for a few tornadoes. If your shelter is vulnerable, prepare to relocate to a safer location. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
