Tropical Storm Warning for Lowndes: Prepare for Hazardous Wind, Flooding
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Lowndes County, including Fort Deposit and Hayneville, with hazardous winds, moderate flooding, and a tornado threat expected from Friday evening through Saturday morning.
LOWNDES COUNTY – A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Lowndes County, effective immediately, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL. The warning, issued at 10:27 PM CDT on October 8, affects Fort Deposit and Hayneville.
Residents should prepare for hazardous winds of 35-45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph from Friday evening until Saturday morning. Remaining efforts to protect property should be completed as soon as possible. Move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous. Limited wind impacts are expected, including potential damage to porches, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes, along with scattered power outages.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Moderate rainfall flooding is possible with 1-3 inches of rain expected, potentially higher in localized areas. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding, and residents in vulnerable areas should consider protective actions. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and floodwaters could enter structures.
The NWS also indicates a potential for a few tornadoes. If your shelter is vulnerable, prepare to relocate. Be ready to shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued. Limited tornado impacts could include damage to roofs, mobile homes, and downed trees.
This warning expires at 6:30 AM UTC on October 9, 2026. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
