A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Lowndes County, effective immediately as of 10:17 AM CDT today, October 9, by the National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL. Residents in Fort Deposit and Hayneville should move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin.

Strong tropical storm force winds of 35-45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected from early this evening until Saturday morning. Significant damage is possible, including to roofing, siding, mobile homes, and trees. Roads may become impassable due to debris, and scattered power outages are anticipated. All remaining efforts to protect life and property must be completed as soon as possible.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. An additional 2-4 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and streams may overflow, and floodwaters could impact structures. Heed all flood watches and warnings.

Tornadoes are not expected at this time. For more information and hurricane preparedness resources, visit ready.gov/hurricanes. This warning expires at 6:30 PM UTC today.
