LOWNDES COUNTY – A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Lowndes County, including Fort Deposit and Hayneville, effective immediately. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, issued the warning at 4:20 PM CDT on October 9. Residents are advised to shelter from dangerous winds now.

Peak winds are forecast to reach 40-50 mph with gusts up to 65 mph, continuing until Saturday morning. The NWS indicates a potential for winds between 58 to 73 mph. Significant wind damage is expected. All last-minute efforts to protect life and property should be complete.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. An additional 2-4 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers may overflow, and low-lying areas are prone to rapid inundation. Driving conditions will become hazardous, with potential road closures. Heed all flood watches and warnings.

Tornadoes are not expected at this time, though gusty winds and thunderstorms are possible. The warning is effective until 12:30 AM UTC on October 10. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
