LOWNDES COUNTY – A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Lowndes County, including Fort Deposit and Hayneville, effective immediately. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, issued the warning today, October 9, at 6:57 AM CDT.

Residents are advised to move to safe shelter as soon as possible, before winds become hazardous. The NWS forecasts strong tropical storm force winds of 45-60 mph with gusts up to 75 mph, beginning early this evening and continuing until Saturday morning. Significant wind damage is possible, including damage to roofing, siding, mobile homes, and numerous trees. Unsecured lightweight objects will become dangerous projectiles. Prepare for potential scattered power and communication outages.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Lowndes County can expect 2-4 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, leading to potential moderate flooding. Rivers and small streams may overflow, and floodwaters could enter some structures. Be prepared for possible evacuations and rescues. Do not drive through flooded roadways.

The tornado threat is currently low. For more information and safety instructions, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
