A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Lowndes County, including Fort Deposit and Hayneville, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, effective immediately. Residents must complete preparations and seek safe shelter before Friday evening, as tropical storm-force winds are expected to begin.
Peak winds are forecast to be 45-55 mph with gusts up to 75 mph from Friday evening through Saturday morning. Significant impacts are expected, including potential damage to roofing, siding, and mobile homes. Several large trees may be snapped or uprooted, leading to impassable roads and scattered power outages. Move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Lowndes County can expect 1-3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, potentially causing moderate flooding. Rivers and small streams may overflow, and floodwaters could enter structures. Heed any flood watches and warnings. Emergency plans should include the potential for evacuations and rescues. Driving conditions will become hazardous.
Additionally, there is a potential for a few tornadoes. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. The NWS advises all residents to visit ready.gov/hurricanes for more information and to prepare for these severe conditions.
