Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Dangerous Rip Currents and Coastal Flooding Expected
A Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory have been issued for Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands, Ventura County Beaches, Malibu Coast, and Los Angeles County Beaches, warning of dangerous rip currents, elevated surf, and minor coastal flooding from Tuesday, October 5, through Friday, October 8.
Beachgoers in Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands, Ventura County Beaches, Malibu Coast, and Los Angeles County Beaches should exercise extreme caution due to a Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA.
The Beach Hazards Statement, effective from Tuesday afternoon, October 5, until late Tuesday night, warns of dangerous rip currents and powerful breaking waves due to elevated surf. Swimmers and surfers are advised to remain out of the water or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties are particularly hazardous during these conditions, and individuals should stay off them.
A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect from 6 AM Wednesday, October 6, to 11 PM PDT Friday, October 8. This advisory anticipates minor coastal flooding and elevated surf, particularly affecting vulnerable low-lying coastal areas such as beach parking lots, bike paths, and harbor walkways around high tide. Moderate beach erosion is also likely. Specific areas with the greatest potential for coastal flooding impacts include Long Beach, Catalina Island, Zuma Beach, and Malibu.
Residents in affected areas should take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. It is crucial to never drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. The increased risk of ocean drowning is significant, and waves can easily wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore.
