Beach Hazards and Coastal Flood Advisory for Local Beaches

A Beach Hazards Statement is active until Wednesday morning for local beaches, followed by a Coastal Flood Advisory through Friday, bringing dangerous rip currents, elevated surf, and potential minor to moderate coastal flooding.

Residents and visitors in Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands, Ventura County Beaches, Malibu Coast, and Los Angeles County Beaches should take immediate precautions due to a Beach Hazards Statement and an impending Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA.

The Beach Hazards Statement is in effect until 6:00 AM PDT on Wednesday, October 7th, warning of dangerous rip currents and breaking waves due to elevated surf. Swimmers and surfers are advised to remain out of the water due to hazardous conditions or to stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Additionally, stay off rock jetties as they can be deadly in these conditions.

A Coastal Flood Advisory will then take effect from 6:00 AM PDT Wednesday, October 7th, until 11:00 PM PDT Friday, October 9th. This advisory anticipates minor to locally moderate coastal flooding, elevated surf, and continued dangerous rip currents. Moderate flooding of sea water is likely over vulnerable low-lying coastal areas, particularly around high tide. This includes beach parking lots, bike paths, and harbor walkways. Moderate beach erosion is also expected. Areas of particular concern for coastal flooding impacts include Long Beach (especially Alamitos Peninsula), Catalina Island, and Malibu.

Property owners in flood-prone areas should take necessary actions to protect their property. Do NOT drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. The increased risk of ocean drowning, rip currents pulling individuals out to sea, and waves washing people off beaches and rocks or capsizing small boats nearshore necessitates extreme caution.
