Winter Storm Warning for Southern Rockies, High Plains; 10-20 inches of snow
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Southern Rocky Mountain Front, Southern High Plains, Upper Blackfoot and MacDonald Pass, and Gates of the Mountains until October 12 at 6:00 AM MDT, with 10-20 inches of heavy, wet snow expected and difficult travel conditions.
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Great Falls MT, effective immediately, October 10 at 10:56 AM MDT, until October 12 at 6:00 AM MDT. Residents in the Gates of the Mountains, Upper Blackfoot and MacDonald Pass, Southern High Plains, and Southern Rocky Mountain Front areas should prepare for heavy, wet snow.
Total snow accumulations are expected to be between 10 and 20 inches, with isolated amounts potentially reaching 30 inches within the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The Lincoln valley is an exception, expecting up to 7 inches. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph.
Travel conditions are expected to become very difficult. Gusty winds combined with the heavy, wet snow may bring down tree branches, leading to isolated power outages. Snowfall accumulations on roadways, particularly at lower elevations, will be most significant from this evening through late morning hours.
If travel is necessary, the NWS advises keeping an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. For the latest road conditions, dial 511.
