Sumter County Public Works Saves $340,000 on Culvert Project

Sumter County Public Works completed a major culvert replacement project for $140,000 using in-house crews, compared to a $487,000 contractor bid.

The Operations Division replaced three corroded 60-inch corrugated metal pipes on CR 311, installed concrete miter end sections, placed riprap for stabilization, replaced guardrail and fencing, and repaved the roadway.

William "Billy" Stratton, a supervisor, handled pipe and concrete installation. William "Will" Johnson, a senior equipment operator, ran the heavy equipment. Operations Superintendent Eslie Oxendine credited both men for completing the work safely and efficiently.

"Our Operations team stepped up to take on a major project in-house, demonstrating skill and teamwork while being strong stewards of taxpayer dollars," said Michael Bryant, assistant Public Works director of operations.

The county finished the project during National Public Works Week, May 17-23.
