Lakeland resident Shaneeza Mohamed is urging local women to prioritize regular breast cancer screenings and self-exams, emphasizing that early detection significantly impacts treatment options. Mohamed’s personal journey, which began with the discovery of a pea-sized lump in April, highlights the importance of seeking medical attention promptly, even without a family history of the disease.
Mohamed, an HR professional and mother, had a history of benign lumps and annual mammograms. Her December 2025 screening showed no concerns. However, a sharp pain in April prompted her to discover a new lump. She sought further care, leading to a biopsy and a breast cancer diagnosis.
Following her diagnosis, Mohamed consulted with Dr. Vanessa Prowler, a breast surgical oncologist at Tampa General Cancer Institute | Lakeland Regional Health Hollis Cancer Center. Dr. Prowler explained Mohamed’s cancer type and treatment options, empowering her to make informed decisions. Mohamed initially planned a mastectomy with reconstruction for July 15. After reflection, she opted for a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction, which Dr. Prowler and breast surgeon Dr. Eve Paxton performed on July 23.
Dr. Prowler advocates for annual mammograms for women starting no later than age 40, stressing the importance of knowing one’s “normal” to identify changes. She noted that women often neglect their own health while caring for others in communities like Polk County.
Mohamed expects to complete radiation in October and undergo further reconstruction surgery. She expressed gratitude for discovering the lump early and for her medical team's swift action. She encourages all women to make self-exams a priority.
