Florida Polytechnic University in Lakeland hosted a panel discussion Monday, October 6, where over 100 attendees explored Republican and Democratic approaches to key national issues. The event, titled “Two operating systems – one country: Republicans and Democrats discuss different approaches to big challenges,” kicked off the university’s Office of Public Policy Events 2026-2027 community series.
Evan Power, chair of the Republican Party of Florida, and Pamela Castellana, vice chair of Democratic Executive Committee Engagement for the Democratic Party of Florida, spoke on the panel. Dr. Brad Thiessen, Florida Poly’s provost, moderated the discussion. Held four weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections, the event addressed artificial intelligence, affordable housing and public investment—topics relevant to Polk County residents.
Panelists identified common ground, with Castellana stating both parties aim to protect the country, advance society, provide for future generations and safeguard democracy. Power added that both parties share a desire for government transparency.
Dr. Thiessen asked about government's role in rapidly evolving technologies, specifically artificial intelligence. Power called AI “the issue of our time in the next number of years” and likened its impact to the Industrial Revolution, predicting significant workforce changes.
Concluding the evening, Power and Castellana encouraged students to engage politically, regardless of party affiliation. They emphasized that younger generations' involvement will shape future political platforms. Castellana urged participation: “I don’t care if you don’t vote in line with me. Just vote. It’s your voice.”
