September marked World Alzheimer's Month, an occasion for Lakeland residents to join global efforts raising awareness about Alzheimer's disease and dementia. The 2026 theme, "The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do: A Dementia Diagnosis Matters," encouraged community engagement from historic downtown to neighborhoods around Lake Mirror.
Alzheimer's disease causes approximately two-thirds of all dementia cases. While dementia risk increases with age, memory loss is not a normal part of aging. Recognizing early symptoms like short-term memory challenges, confusion, or difficulty with familiar tasks can prompt individuals to seek professional help. Research indicates Alzheimer's symptoms can appear up to 12 years before diagnosis.
Community members can help dispel myths about neurocognitive disorders by supporting global awareness campaigns. These campaigns promote understanding for families, friends, professionals, volunteers, and advocates affected by dementia worldwide.
Ways to participate include attending and promoting awareness events, inviting friends to educational programs, and volunteering with organizations that offer socialization and recreation. For those with loved ones experiencing memory loss, regular calls, visits, or shared meals can improve quality of life.
