Key Biscayne Residents Urged to 'Drain and Cover' to Combat Mosquitoes and Prevent Disease

Key Biscayne residents must take proactive steps to control the local mosquito population and reduce the risk of mosquito-transmitted diseases. Miami-Dade County Mosquito Control inspectors actively work to manage mosquito populations, but community participation remains crucial.

Mosquito control efforts aim to enhance the quality of life for residents and minimize the possibility of mosquito-transmitted illnesses. Inspectors use effective methods, techniques, equipment, and products to achieve this goal.

Residents play a vital role in prevention by eliminating standing water around their homes. This includes regularly draining water from garbage cans, gutters, pool covers, coolers, toys, and flower pots. Discard old items that collect water. Empty and clean birdbaths and pet water bowls once or twice weekly. Protect boats and vehicles with tarps that do not accumulate water. Maintain proper water balance in swimming pools and empty unused plastic pools. Check around faucets and air conditioner units, repairing any leaks or puddles that persist for several days. Remove, drain, or fill tree holes and stumps with mortar. Irrigate lawns and gardens carefully to prevent water from standing for several days. Cut down weeds adjacent to homes and in yards, and mow the lawn regularly.

Beyond eliminating breeding grounds, residents can protect themselves by wearing appropriate clothing. When mosquitoes are active, wear socks, shoes, long pants, and long sleeves. Use insect repellent on bare skin; DEET at a 20 to 30 percent concentration works well for most people when used according to label directions. Do not apply DEET to infants.
