KEMPER COUNTY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Kemper County, effective immediately as of 1:00 PM CDT today, October 9. This warning signifies that tropical storm-force winds are expected within the area in the next 36 hours. Residents should act now to complete all preparations before hazardous winds begin.

Peak wind forecasts anticipate 15-25 mph winds with gusts up to 35 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Limited damage is possible, including to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect broken tree limbs and potential power outages. Hazardous driving conditions may develop, especially on bridges.

A Flood Watch is also in effect for Kemper County, with 1-3 inches of rain expected and locally higher amounts. Moderate rainfall flooding is possible, potentially leading to evacuations and rescues. Rivers and streams may overflow, and floodwaters could impact structures and roads. Heed all flood watches and warnings immediately. Tornadoes are not expected at this time. This alert is effective until 9:00 PM UTC tonight, October 9.
