Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Jasper: Prepare for Wind and Flooding

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Jasper by the NWS, warning of potential tropical storm force winds and significant flooding rain; residents should complete preparations now.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Jasper, effective immediately, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Jackson MS. This watch indicates the potential for tropical storm force winds and significant flooding rain. The watch was issued at 10:16 PM CDT on October 8 and expires at 6:15 AM UTC on October 9, 2026.

Residents should act now to complete preparations before hazardous winds arrive. Peak wind forecasts are 10-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, but the potential exists for winds of 39 to 57 mph. This could lead to damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Many large tree limbs may break, and some trees could snap or uproot. Scattered power and communications outages are possible, and some roads may become impassable due to debris.

Emergency plans should also include the potential for moderate flooding from heavy rain. Locally higher rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are expected. Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries could quickly swell, and flood waters may enter some structures. Hazardous driving conditions are anticipated in low-lying areas and underpasses, with some road and bridge closures possible.

Tornadoes are not expected, according to the NWS. However, showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. Continue to monitor official weather updates from the National Weather Service.
