Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Jasper: Moderate Flooding Possible

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Jasper, with the primary threat being moderate flooding rain, and residents are urged to prepare for potential evacuations and rescues.

JASPER – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Jasper, effective October 9 at 4:09 AM CDT. While peak winds are forecast to be between 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, the primary concern is moderate flooding rain.

Residents are advised to prepare for potential moderate flooding from heavy rain, as evacuations and rescues are possible. Peak rainfall amounts are expected to be around 1 inch. If you are in an area vulnerable to flooding, consider taking protective actions now. Heed any flood watches and warnings issued by local officials, as failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life.

Moderate rainfall flooding could prompt several evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and small streams, creeks, canals, and ditches could overflow. Flood waters may enter some structures or weaken foundations. Expect expanded areas of rapid inundation at underpasses, low-lying spots, and poor drainage areas, making driving conditions hazardous. Some road and bridge closures are possible.

The Tropical Storm Watch is set to expire on October 9 at 12:15 PM CDT. The NWS indicates that tornadoes are not expected at this time, though showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. Continue to listen for instructions from local officials and ensure emergency readiness should the forecast change.
