Jasper County residents should immediately begin preparations as a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued, effective from October 8 at 4:11 PM CDT until October 9 at 12:15 AM UTC. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, indicates tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours.

Forecasted peak winds are 10-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, but the potential exists for hazardous winds between 39 to 57 mph. Residents should secure outdoor property and prepare for limited wind damage, including to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect some broken tree limbs, potential uprooted trees, and possible scattered power and communications outages. Act now to complete preparations.

Significant flooding rain is also a concern, with 1-3 inches of rainfall expected, and locally higher amounts possible. This could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and streams may overflow, and floodwaters could impact structures, particularly in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Heed any flood watches and warnings, as failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life.

Tornadoes are not expected at this time, though gusty winds from showers and thunderstorms are possible. Stay informed of the latest forecast updates from the National Weather Service.
