Beach Hazards Statement Issued for Ocracoke Island: Dangerous Rip Currents Expected
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Ocracoke Island until 8 PM EDT tonight, September 25, with dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves expected, alongside a Coastal Flood Warning.
Residents and visitors on Ocracoke Island are advised that a Beach Hazards Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City NC, effective immediately until 8:00 PM EDT this evening, September 25.
Dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves are expected in the surf zone. The NWS warns that rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Dangerous shore break can cause serious injuries.
In conjunction with the Beach Hazards Statement, a Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 11 AM EDT Saturday. Up to 2 to 4 feet of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Up to 1 foot of inundation is possible for sound-side flooding due to strong northerly winds. Portions of Highway 12 between Pony Pens and the ferry dock remain closed, and numerous other roads may be affected. Low-lying property, including homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, may be inundated.
If caught in a rip current, remain calm and swim parallel to the shoreline. If tired, float or tread water until out of the current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. When in breaking waves, protect your head and neck by keeping your hands in front of you at all times. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
