Hollywood Commissioner Shuham: Sustainability & Community Leader

Hollywood Commissioner Caryl Shuham works to make the city a model for economic and environmental sustainability. Representing District 1, Shuham prioritizes affordability, environmental protection, and addressing sea-level rise impacts.

She also focuses on improving code compliance, traffic and safety concerns, and preserving Hollywood's history. Shuham collaborates with local public schools, reflecting her commitment to education and community involvement.

Shuham, born in Baltimore, earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland. For over 35 years, she has practiced law, representing construction industry companies. She and her husband, Marty, co-own the law firm Shuham & Shuham, P.A., in downtown Hollywood.

Her community involvement includes serving on the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization Board, the Broward County Climate Change Task Force, and the Broward County Solid Waste Authority Board, where she sits on the Executive Committee. Shuham chairs Broward's Metro Transportation Engineering & Construction Cooperative (MTECC) and Broward's Local Coordinating Board for the Transportation Disadvantaged. Following the Surfside tragedy, she also served on the Broward County Condominium Structural Issues Committee.

Shuham earned recognition as a Florida League of Cities Home Rule Hero and a Broward County School Board Outstanding Mentor of the Year. She is a member of the Hollywood Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Her professional development includes the Florida League of Cities Institute for Elected Municipal Officials and a Certificate of Achievement from the Broward County Leaders Water and Climate Academy.

Volunteering remains central to Shuham's life. She previously mentored with Women of Tomorrow at Hollywood Hills High School, served as an officer on the North Beach Condominium Association board, and participated in the City's Dune Master Plan Task Force. She is a graduate of Leadership Hollywood and held leadership roles within the Broward Public Schools Partners in Education program, the JCC Book Festival, and the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation Take Steps Walk. Shuham is a member of the Hollywood Women's Club, the Hollywood Historical Society, the Art & Culture Center of Hollywood, The Hollywood Rotary Club, and the Lion's Club of Hollywood.
